Event Details

Please join Elizabeth for a presentation on her three-week trip to the “Silk Road” countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. We’ll discuss the rich history of the region, that was the focus of explorers like Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Marco Polo, and Tamerlane, and an area of interest to the British and Russian Empires before becoming part of the Soviet Union. We’ll visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Nisa, and will learn of the tribal, religious, architectural, and cultural traditions of the civilizations along this ancient trade route. We will admire ancient and contemporary art and music and the magnificent mosaics of mosques and madrasas, and will visit falcon and horse farms as well as markets, monuments and museums. We will meet the people and experience the varied geography of the region and the modern cities of today’s independent states. Elizabeth arrived in Fort Collins in 2010 after a career in higher education, including eleven years in administrative positions in universities for women in the Middle East. She has traveled in over 90 countries, and is interested in all things international. Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at the Old Town Library Thursday, January 23, 2020 at the Council Tree Library (for this month's presentation only)
