Please join Klaus Lorenz for a presentation on his travels to South Africa to discover the cultural and natural wonders of the land. Starting in Johannesburg we will tour the historic Old Fort Prison, which during the apartheid era held political prisoners including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. We walk through Soweto, the bustling center of black South African life and a symbol of the struggle to end apartheid. We follow exotic wildlife on game-viewing drives in Kruger National Park and in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve to spot the “Big Five "--lion , elephant, leopard, cape buffalo and rhino . In addition to game animals, Kruger Park boasts an avian population of nearly 500 species. We will visit a Rastafarian community, then explore Stellenbosch, South Africa`s wine producing region, a scenic river valley of rolling hills, quaint farms and mountain vistas. A cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain provides breathtaking views of the Cape Peninsula from the top. Finally, we drive along the spectacular coastal road passing balmy, white sandy beaches and tranquil lagoons. As a visitor a came away with the impression that South Africa has indeed become, as Nelson Mandela envisioned, a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world. Klaus is well known to those of you who regularly attend INL. He has traveled to over 95 countries and shared many of these adventures with us at the Library Program.
