Why Does it Look Like That? Societal Ideals Reflected Through Architecture

Event Details

Did you know that architectural designs can be reflective of society’s current values? Join local author Jean Messinger for her visual presentation on why a courthouse looks like a courthouse, or a church like a church. Messinger will explore how societal values were interpreted through architecture in more democratic societies, with identical columns and symmetry reflecting values like equality and justice, as well as how these ideals could be sometimes corrupted in more totalitarian regimes, bringing about overdone decoration. Buildings that require trust, respect, and honesty, like government buildings, banks, schools, libraries, have often used the Classical style; examples are all around us, in every town and city.
