Off the Hook Arts and PRPLD presents Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Dr. David Patton Barone. Parents are keen on reading to kids and getting them started with academic skills. But if you want your kids to have the best developed brains, sing with them and give them an instrument to play. Playing music gets many brain centers and the two brain hemispheres to coordinate, a benefit that goes beyond musical performance. There’s science to support this claim and we’ll look at the evidence. But how do you get kids to practice? It seems like a lot of monotonous repetition. Should kids be learning to play by ear and to improvise? Dr. Barone will talk about the research and start a discussion about strategies to foster musicianship in young children.
