Please join Elizabeth Stanley at International Night at the Library for a presentation on her travels in Costa Rica with a group of photographers, and an independent excursion to Nicaragua. Costa Rica is known for its flora and fauna and the great diversity of its natural landscapes. A ten-day trip led by a photography instructor and a naturalist provided many exciting opportunities to observe and photograph a fascinating variety of birds, flowers, landscapes, and people, while learning about the natural history, environment, and culture. During the presentation, we will visit the Central Valley, including San Jose and the Lankester Botanic Gardens at Cartago; the North Central Region, including the active Volcán Arenal and the Ecocentro Danaus in La Fortuna; the Tropical Rainforest in the Rio Sarapiqui area, including a boat trip on the river and studies of birds and reptiles; the Highlands, including San Gerardo de Dota on the high-elevation Rio Savegre, sightings of the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, and studies of hummingbirds; and the Pacific Coast, including Dominical and the Ballena National Marine Park. Nicaragua is easily reached by bus from San Jose, and a brief visit provided more opportunities for travel and photography in natural areas, as well as an appreciation of the culture. We will see scenes of Granada and nearby towns, the cloud forest of the Reserva Natural Volcán Mombacho, the islets of Lago de Nicaragua, and Laguna de Apoyo. Elizabeth arrived in Fort Collins in 2010 after a career in higher education, including eleven years in administrative positions in universities for women in the Middle East. She has traveled in over 80 countries, and is interested in all things international.
