Please join Klaus Lorenz for a presentation on his travels to Panama. Panama is a tropical country located between Costa Rica and Colombia, offers a unique blend of treasures both natural and cosmopolitan. During the land portion of our journey we will visit the major cities of the country Panama City, Chitre, Las Tablas among others, stop at a "pollera”, the pollera being the beautifully embroidered dress that was introduced by the Spanish, visit a pottery shop and the maker of devil masks used by the Spanish missionaries to scare the local population to convert to the catholic religion. We will spend time in the village of the Embera people, one of Panama’s indigenous tribes and take a nature walk in the lush tropical rain forest to view its diverse flora and fauna. We then transit on a 24 passenger catamaran the Panama canal -among mankind`s most astonishing achievement representing a culmination of toil, diplomacy, and engineering prowess unmatched in the modern world. Sailing from Colon on the Caribbean Sea, through Lake Gatun, the 2nd largest man-made lake in the world, to Panama City on the North Pacific Ocean, while discussing the history and construction of the canal. Klaus is well known to those of you who regularly attend INL. He has traveled to over 80 countries and shared many of these adventures with us at the Library Program. He is retired from CSU and enjoys traveling the world.
