Event Details

In his second Maya show, Richard Grant will share new photos from his eighteenth trip through Central America. You are invited to enjoy pictures and stories from his four-week bus and boat journey through Mexico and Guatemala to five rarely-visited Maya archaeology sites. Our adventure begins in Chiapas, Mexico, where you will climb the massive, seven-level temple complex at Tonina. Enjoy San Juan Chamula’s market day and the beautiful fabrics of Zinacantan, two Maya villages near San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico. See the colorful political murals in the Zapatista-controlled village of Oventik in the highlands of Chiapas. Accessible only by small boat along the Usumacinta River, journey deep into the Guatemalan jungle to the remote, unrestored ruins of Piedras Negras and the Busil Ha waterfalls. Visit the rural village of Bethel and the island town of Flores in Guatemala. Staying at a solar-powered jungle lodge, explore the island ruins of Topoxte and the large pyramids of Yaxha, location of the 2005 "Survivor: Guatemala" television program. Finally, travel north into the Peten jungle beyond Tikal to the ancient solar observation temples at Uaxactun, aligned perfectly for the equinoxes and solstices.
