Event Details

Leopard seals are apex predators in Antarctic seas, controlling populations of fur seals and other marine animals. They are one of only three species of marine mammals that routinely feed on both ectothermic prey, like fish and krill, and endothermic prey, like penguins and other seals. Because of this diverse diet, leopard seals may have an advantage in the face of a changing Antarctic environment, especially compared to more specialized predators such as crabeater seals, Weddell seals, emperor penguins, and Adelie penguins. In this talk, Professor Shane Kanatous will tell us about the goals of a newly funded project to investigate the behavior and energetics of leopard seals in Antarctica.
