Antarctic Lecture: UNAVCO - Powering Science at high latitude

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Old Town Library
Large Meeting Room Combo

Event Details

For over 30 years, UNAVCO has provided a variety of geodetic services to the science community. More than 100 continuous GPS/GNSS Stations with communications currently operate in Greenland and Antarctica. How are these science instruments powered through 4 months of darkness and temperatures of –30 and below? And how do they survive against forces of nature such as extremely high winds and marauding polar bears? Thomas Nylen will provide a synopsis of the UNAVCO Polar power systems, and show examples of the many lessons learned along the way. He will also talk about the possible new technologies and developments to obtain lighter, more efficient power system in the Polar Regions.
