Please join Anam Riaz from Burewala, Pakistan, where she is an environmental sciences student in her last year at the University of the Punjab in central Pakistan. She is studying in the U.S. for one semester under the Global Undergraduate Semester Exchange Program by IREX in Washington, D.C. Did you know that in 2010, 19 girls from Karachi, Pakistan, made a world record for fitting the most people into a Smart Car ? That title has since been taken by 20 cheerleaders in Glendale, California earlier this year. Pakistan is a country enriched with great stories, people, food and sports. The young country, just 70 years old, is a country with an intriguing history and people. Some Pakistani citizens even remember a time when Pakistan, the country, didn’t exist! One main difference between Pakistan and the U.S. is that in Pakistan, wedding festivals last for many days at a time, in comparison to the couple of hours that a ceremony might take in the U.S. The local cultural costumes that the people wear make the geographically small country culturally diverse too. The beautiful landscapes, from the second-highest mountain in the world to the valleys that lay beneath the summits, attract many tourists. In contrast, Pakistan also offers hot deserts where jeep races are often held. For one country, the landscape is uniquely diverse. In Pakistan, children play games in the streets in the evening, and frequently send desserts and other delicious food to their neighbors. The traffic system is totally amazing, and a bit terrifying, for people from other continents. During the presentation, we shall get to know the talented people in Pakistan who call the nation their home, the achievements that the people and the country have come to own, and the history of what has made up this great nation. We hope you can join us as Anam tells us about her country and will enjoy an evening of learning about a culture a half-world’s distance away.
