Event Details

Resource Conservation and Tourism in the West Bank; Challenges & Opportunities for Palestinians and Israelis. Cheryl Hazlitt will share her experiences traveling to the West Bank in 2010 with the International Program Department of the US Forest Service. She traveled there with a team to provide technical support to the Palestinian Wildlife Fund, a nonprofit group that works to conserve and protect natural and cultural heritage sites on the West Bank. Her team toured four of these sites; providing analysis and recommendations to the Palestinian Authority; and provided training on tourism recreation needs and requirements. During her visit, Cheryl met with numerous government officials and professionals from the Palestinian Authority, and witnessed conditions on the West Bank. This visit occurred during the time that George Mitchell was representing the US Secretary of State in trying to broker a long-term solution to the ongoing conflicts. For Cheryl, it provided an up-close view of conditions and situations that Palestinian people, Arabic Israelis and Israeli citizens must regularly navigate. It made her acutely aware of how little Americans really know or understand of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
